The Inspiring Life of Sofia Coppola

Director Sofia Coppola, who inspires everyone with her art, was born on May 14, 1971. Sofia’s first movie “The Virgin Suicides” is an influential one among others. The theme in this movie is death and suicide. The title of the movie makes it clear that death and suicide are central themes. The suicides of the Lisbon sisters are a source of fascination and horror for the neighborhood boys and their deaths cast a shadow over the entire community. At thirteen, Cecilia is the youngest Lisbon girl, and the first to go. She committed suicide twice and ultimately achieved her goal.

“Cecilia was first to go, Lux was last to go…”

Another significant movie of Sofia Coppola is Marie Antoinette. Kirsten Dunst, whom we know from The Virgin Suicides, played the leading role in this movie. Marie, who was the queen of France in the past, is known for her passion for luxury and ostentation. This movie seemed to be a royal mess. A period piece about “The Bad Queen” herself with an alt-rock soundtrack? But if you add Sofia Coppola’s name to this, you have one of those movies that is brutally honest, funny, and surprisingly relatable.

“Archive” is the first book by Sofia Coppola. Covering the entirety of her singular and influential career in film. Designs as scrapbooks has always been alluring and this book is a beautiful example of that.  A mosaic of beautiful pinks and pop culture references: a mood board, archive, and time capsule all in one.

Furthermore the Priscilla movie which came out on October 27th, 2023 was glorious. When teenage Priscilla Beaulieu meets Elvis Presley at a party, the man who is already a meteoric rock-and-roll superstar becomes someone entirely unexpected in private moments: a thrilling crush, an ally in loneliness, a vulnerable best friend. Through Priscilla’s eyes, Sofia Coppola tells the unseen side of a great American myth in Elvis and Priscilla’s long courtship and turbulent marriage, from a German army base to his dream-world estate at Graceland, in this deeply felt and ravishingly detailed portrait of love, fantasy, and fame.

The thing about Priscilla is that Elvis chose her because she kept quiet when he told her to. All of the other women were on the front page talking about their romances with him and she was forced to watch in silence. So when people complain about her not speaking much in this film, it is quite confusing. Because there aren’t many words needed when you can just feel it with her.
